ITIS/Ljubljana 33-contact spiral cuff (2018 research prototype)
ITIS/Ljubljana’s manufactured 33-contact spiral cuff, with contact rows visible through its sheath. Original 17 mm scale retained.
2018 research prototype for peripheral nerve stimulation. A separate architecture from the CWRU/Ardiem standard four-contact cuff; not a brain-penetrating electrode or an approved commercial product.

ITIS/Ljubljana 33-contact spiral cuff
This is a distinct prototype from the CWRU/Ardiem self-sizing cuff. The photograph shows manufactured hardware, rather than a rendered model.
Identity
| Field | Value and source scope |
|---|---|
| Developer | ITIS, University of Ljubljana and Institute of Metals and Technology; Rozman et al., 2018 |
| Function | Extraneural stimulation of peripheral nerve |
| Evidence | Isolated porcine vagus nerve testing; human use of this photographed prototype not established |
| Regulatory status | Research prototype; approval not established |
Geometry and architecture
| Field | Value and source scope |
|---|---|
| Contact count | 33, reported in the abstract and Figure 1 |
| Nominal inner diameter | 2.5 mm |
| Cuff length | 17 mm |
| Resting turns | 1.5 |
| Contact dimensions | 2.5 × 0.7 mm |
| Circumferential separation | 0.5 mm |
| Longitudinal separation | 2.5 mm |
| Material | Platinum contacts, silicone sheath, insulated stainless-steel leads |
| Placement | Wrapped around a peripheral nerve; does not penetrate brain tissue |
Evidence and limitations
The paper reports 33 electrodes, but one Methods sentence describes thirteen groups of three. This unresolved inconsistency prevents a verified contact-layout reconstruction. The publisher correction concerns the title only.
Chronic human performance, impedance, charge-injection limit, recording performance and approved stimulation settings are not established here. The study’s weld-strength tests are not a clinical safety rating.
