Devices

Probe with a tip about 100 nm across and a sensing region exposed over about 40 nm, so only the tip site sits inside one neuron. Records intracellular action potentials up to about 70 mV and synaptic currents in live mouse. Liu Jingquan's group at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (IEEE MEMS 2026 award paper).

SJTU implantable nanoscale neural probe (INNP)

A penetrating probe small enough to enter a single neuron in the living brain and record from inside it, rather than from outside as microelectrodes do. From Liu Jingquan’s team at the National Key Laboratory of Micro/Nano Fabrication Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University; first author Du Zhiyuan. Paper: “Implantable Nanoscale Neural Probe for Single-Neuron Intracellular Electrophysiological Analysis In Vivo”, IEEE MEMS 2026 (Salzburg, 25 to 29 January 2026), outstanding student paper award. The source is SJTU’s Chinese news release of 6 February 2026. The conference paper was not read, so materials, fabrication steps and impedance are blank.

Regulatory statusResearch device [1]

Geometry and architecture

FieldValue and source scope
Tip diameterAbout 100 nm [1]
Exposed sensing lengthAs low as about 40 nm, so only the tip site lies inside the neuron and the non-sensing shaft does not pick up extracellular signals or ambient noise [1]
Channels

Materials and fabrication

FieldValue and source scope
Nanotip processingDescribed as nano-tip micro-fabrication; atmospheric-pressure plasma jet micro-nano processing is the first author’s stated research area [1]
Materials, insulation, steps

Performance envelope

FieldValue and source scope
Intracellular signalsAction potentials up to about 70 mV and postsynaptic currents from hundreds to thousands of pA, recorded in vivo in mouse [1]
MultimodalRecords electrophysiology and several biochemical markers at once [1]
Pain-stimulus resultPain stimulation increased the amplitude of negative postsynaptic current spikes, narrowed their half width and produced clear positive spikes [1]
Stability and safetyDescribed as electrochemically stable, biocompatible and minimally damaging; no numbers given [1]

Limits

Conference result reported by the university. Recording duration, yield and neuron counts are not stated. The same group has related probes in cell culture and a nanotube optical-electrical probe (see sheet 206).
