Applications

Four example experimental programs use long-shank Neuropixels probes in macaques for sensory, motor and cognitive questions. Sequential banks, multi-probe populations and clinical claims are kept separate.

Acute macaque multi-area recordings

Trautmann and colleagues demonstrate Neuropixels 1.0 NHP hardware in four example experimental programs across different laboratories. The programs ask sensory, motor and cognitive questions; they are not four clinical trials.

What the long shank enables

Programmable selection of 384 channels from 4,416 sites allows experimenters to sample selected parts of a long trajectory without physically moving the probe. A single bank spans approximately 3.84 mm. Multi-bank recordings can sample different regions, while sequential bank changes survey broader depths over time. Sequential measurements are not all simultaneous recordings.

The visual examples include mapping across cortical areas and across sessions. In one example session, sequential sampling across five banks yielded 3,029 isolated neurons, including 2,729 visually responsive neurons. This is not 3,029 simultaneously recorded neurons from one 384-channel bank. A separate analysis follows the same anatomical locations across up to 23 successive sessions; it is not the source of that single-session count.

Multi-probe scaling

The report demonstrates simultaneous recording with up to seven probes. This increases readout capacity beyond one probe’s 384 channels, but the paper warns against assuming linear yield gains. Dura resistance and competing placement constraints make it harder to optimize every insertion.

Research boundary

These acute macaque examples demonstrate recording access and scientific measurements. They do not establish long-term implanted durability, human safety, a chronic clinical BCI or voluntary assistive-device operation. Automatic spike isolation and drift correction support analysis; they do not remove every sorting or motion uncertainty.
